SIXTH COMMANDMENT: Thou shalt not kill.
Why does the Lord tell us not to kill? Because it will stop their progression and their learning experience here on earth. We all come for at least three reasons.
Reason One: All of His children need to come to the earth and obtain a physical body for their spirit. We are to learn how to have our spirit, who we really are, to control and train the body we have, to be subject to us and not the spirit being controlled by the body. We (the spirit) are what gives the body life, like a hand gives a glove life. That is happening now and has since Adam and Eve, who were real people and not a myth as some think.
Reason Two: We have come here to gain the experiences that Heavenly Father knows we need that we did not learn during our life in the spirit world.
Reason Three: We are here, with our memory of our former spirit life blocked by a veil of forgetfulness so that this life would be our Final Test. We would be tested in all things with the gift of Free Agency to choose, which all of us were given in the spirit world. Now, here on earth, our Father in Heaven will see how we will choose between good and evil, right and wrong.
All of Heavenly Father’s children need to go through this test.
If someone is killed, that would stop that person from being tested and it would cut short his experience or test here on earth, which would determine his eternal state in the next life. That is why murder is so bad in the sight of God.
When the Lord said that we should not kill, He was talking about taking innocent life for no reason. Once a spirit is born and obtains a body, that is their body and their time.
There is not a second chance to be re-born and start again. There is no such thing as re-incarnation. That is a doctrine of Satan telling you that you can do what you want in this life and that you will have another chance later.
The Lord told us in the Book of Mormon:
Alma 43: 45-47
45 Nevertheless, the Nephites were inspired by a better cause, for they were not fighting for monarchy nor power but they were fighting for their homes and their liberties, their wives and their children, and their all, yea, for their rites of worship and their church.
46 And they were doing that which they felt was the duty which they owed to their God; for the Lord had said unto them, and also unto their fathers, that: Inasmuch as ye are not guilty of the first offense, neither the second, ye shall not suffer yourselves to be slain by the hands of your enemies.
47 And again, the Lord has said that: Ye shall defend your families even unto bloodshed. Therefore for this cause were the Nephites contending with the Lamanites, to defend themselves, and their families, and their lands, their country, and their rights, and their religion.
The Lord has inspired His Prophet Joseph Smith to write the Articles of Faith of this worldwide church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
In the twelfth Article of Faith he told us how we should treat the government which each of us live under:
Article of Faith 12
12 We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.
When it has to do with war, there is a big difference in destroying life while acting under the orders of national sovereign which we are commanded to obey.
Just wantonly killing someone on our own is our own responsibility and we will individually be judged on that act.
When we are ordered by the government, which we are powerless to resist, to kill our enemy, whatever may be wrong will be on the heads of that government.
We have brethren all over the world and under the control of different governments that hold the Melchizedek priesthood that pray to the same God and neither side cannot be completely right or wrong.
God will work it out in His own sovereign way what was right or wrong in the conflict and He will not hold our brothers in arms, which are innocent, responsible for the conflict.
God is in control of everything and only He will be able to judge right and wrong perfectly.

THE TEN COMMANDMANTS TODAY - PART 5
FIFTH COMMANDMENT: Honor thy father and thy mother that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
This is an important commandment in the sight of God, the Father. Good family relationships are one of the fundamental principles of the Ten Commandments which pertain to this world and in eternity.
When we are honoring our earthly parents, we are also honoring God, the Father of our spirits.
If people obey this law, it affects all other parts of society for the better.
Paul knew this and he talked about what would happen in the last days, the days we are living in now.
2 Timothy 3: 1-5
1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
To honor your father and mother will bring peace in the family. A peaceful obedience to parents will be reflected in those around you.
When parents are righteous and good, believe in God and keep His commandments, it is easier for children to obey this commandment to honor them. Sometimes it may not be easy but they will, for the most part, do it.
There are also times that the parents are not good and ignore God and His commandments. Should the children disobey them if they are asked to do something that is not right?
The Apostle Paul talks about this also.
Ephesians 6: 1-4
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
2 Honor thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)
3 That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
If a child grows up and lives his life righteously, whether his parents were righteous or unrighteous, he still brings honor to his parents. When the child lives a wicked lifestyle, it does not matter if the parents were righteous or wicked, the shame still comes upon the parents.
Each child of Heavenly Father, born into mortality through Adam and Eve, has it within himself or herself, that inner knowledge what is right and wrong. If, by some encouragement by their parents, the children are told to do things that are not good, and they do them, he or she still brings dishonor to them.
Some parents may fail in their calling to bring up their children righteously.
When the children recognize and decide not to follow them in their lifestyle, those children have to recognize also, that their parents were chosen by God to be His representative on earth to train and care for them.
The children still have the obligation to honor their parents.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS TODAY - PART 4
FOURTH COMMANDMENT: Remember The Sabbath Day, To Keep It Holy.
The Lord has given us the Sabbath Day to be a covenant between Him and us while we are in mortality. We are His children and He expects us to worship Him and show our gratitude for what He has given us.
He has given us this day to rest from our labors. He tells us to work six days for or living and existence on the earth, but then to stop and remember Him.
He wants us to be humble before Him and to praise Him, and if we do, we will be moving towards exaltation and to be more like Him.
He does not want us to do the things we regularly do, but to prepare simple meals and to allow those who labor for us to be free from work also. Even the animals that work for us like on a farm, we are to turn them out to graze and rest also.
It is a day we leave our businesses and be released from the trials that normally trouble us daily. We are even relieved one day a week from His word to Adam when He told Adam:
Genesis 3: 19
19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
It is a day to go to church and worship and partake of the Sacrament and ask forgiveness of our sins. We are to rest our spirit, minds and body.
It is a day of singing, hearing and giving sermons and prayers and bearing our testimonies. It is a time to bring our Heavenly Father closer to us and to feel His love and for us to show our love for Him.
It is a day in which we are to analyze our life here, to see what we need to change and what weaknesses we have and how to strengthen them.
It is also a day to study the scriptures, read a good book, visit the sick, preach the Gospel, to visit quietly with our family, to nap and relax, a day to contemplate the glories of the gospel and of the eternal realms.
Instead, we find many people doing their daily work or playing. Stores and restaurants are open, factories are continuously running. Fun parks and beaches are open and sometimes crowded. Movie theaters have long lines for tickets, the canyons and state parks are busy.
Ballgames like football and baseball are played drawing record crowds. Farmers do their regular daily routine of plowing and harvesting and all have pushed out of their mind what the day is and why it is important.
Many go fishing, mountain climbing, boating and the highways are busy, and people are doing their own thing. People are out cutting their lawn when it could have been done on Saturday.
Shopping could have been done on Saturday if they had thought of the Sabbath day and prepared ahead.
Week after week they do the same thing and do not obey the Forth Commandment.
Sometimes many do not have a choice. Their employer compels them to work on Sunday or be fired. Some lucky people can compromise with the employer to be allowed to go to church and still put in some time at work. When employment is hard to find and that is the only job they can find, they find themselves like an ‘Ox in the mire.’
They cannot do much about it, but don’t be the one looking for the ‘mire’ as an excuse from worship.
Change of employment and a financial sacrifice can sometimes be done. Remember, the Lord has promised that He would bless those who live His laws and keep His commandments.
You are in the process of sanctification if you observe the Sabbath Day and strive to keep His commandments.
Alma 13: 12
12 Now they, after being sanctified by the Holy Ghost, having their garments made white, being pure and spotless before God, could not look upon sin save it were with abhorrence; and there were many, exceedingly great many, who were made pure and entered into the rest of the Lord their God.
Do not give up. Put the Lord first in your life.

Doctrine and Covenants 63: 60-62
60 Behold, I am Alpha and Omega, even Jesus Christ.
61 Wherefore, let all men beware how they take my name in their lips—
62 For behold, verily I say, that many there be who are under this condemnation, who use the name of the Lord, and use it in vain, having not authority.
Profanity is the proof of a diseased soul.
Matthew 12: 34-35
34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.
Those who take His name in vain will be held accountable. Deep repentance is needed.
Profanity is any language that shows contempt for holy things that breathes a spirit of irreverence or blasphemy.
Vulgarity or rudeness in conduct or speech can be found where the Spirit of the Lord has not attained full control of the hearts of a person.
Being refined or decent and increased sensitivity to the Spirit is always present to those who obey divine law. Having the Spirit and obeying divine law enables a person to enjoy a Celestial Society.
There are other ways of taking the name of God in vain, like when you take oaths and make covenants with Him and break them.
An example is baptism. When you are baptized, you take upon you the name of Christ. If you forget that solemn oath made at baptism, you have taken the name of the Lord in vain.
Men and Women who go to the temples of God and make covenants, if after they leave they live like they never went there, even though they do not swear, they still take His name in vain.
If those who take the sacrament each week do not think it is very important in renewing their baptismal covenants in keeping the commandments and always remember Him, they take His name in vain.
God looks at this as vainness.
Profanity is not compatible with reverence.
At this important time in history, when we need the help of God, we should not offend Him with our language.
How can we understand how people can pray to God in sincere prayer asking for a blessing from Him and at the same time take His name in vain and still expect God to help him in his troubles?
All of these Ten Commandments need to be read and understood. They were made for the World, all nations, not just Israel because all of us are God’s children.
He knows us better than we know ourselves. He sent us here to get a physical body and to learn to take care of it. He gave us Free Agency to choose whether we keep His Commandments or to ignore them.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS TODAY - PART 2
SECOND COMMANDMENT: Thou Shalt Not Make Unto Thee Any Graven Image.
We are living in a day of troubles. Many “do their own thing” and do not believe in God. They feel that is just a myth to control people.
In modern revelation to a prophet of God, the Lord said:
Doctrine and Covenants 1: 14-16
14 And the arm of the Lord shall be revealed; and the day cometh that they who will not hear the voice of the Lord, neither the voice of his servants, neither give heed to the words of the prophets and apostles, shall be cut off from among the people;
15 For they have strayed from mine ordinances, and have broken mine everlasting covenant;
16 They seek not the Lord to establish his righteousness, but every man walketh in his own way, and after the image of his own god, whose image is in the likeness of the world, and whose substance is that of an idol, which waxeth old and shall perish in Babylon, even Babylon the great, which shall fall.
Most concerting is the worshiping of the gods of today.
I will name some of them. Think of your life and see if you are worshiping these.
Some are very plush, chrome, wood, stone and fabrics. They are not even in the image of man or God but are things that give comfort or pleasure, take care of their wants and passions and desires.
Some are homes, clothes, machines, automobiles, boats, computers, planes and they concentrate on them as goals.
They don’t have to be in the shape of an idol.
Things that are intangible make ready gods also, like Degrees, letters and titles. These degrees and the search for wealth and security are coveted so much that service to the Living God, Our Heavenly Father, is put aside or abandoned. Some in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints have fallen into this area, ignoring the spiritual covenants they have made. It is the same in many churches.
Some people spend so much in a home and automobiles and then find out they cannot pay their tithing or offerings to their church. Whom do they worship? Not the God of Heaven. First considerations for these types of people give to or for the object of their affection and their desires.
Young couples who put off having children so they can get their degrees first might be shocked if their expressed preference were called idolatry. They get their degrees at the expense of children. The longer they wait the more chance they may not live long enough to see their grand or great grandchildren.
Many couples realize that life is not given to us for ease, comforts and expensive items, complete their education while having their children and giving in community service and to their church.
Then you come to those who like football, baseball, golf, hunting and fishing and put these ahead of keeping the Sabbath Day Holy. This would show where their loyalty lie, not necessarily in the worship of God.
Then there are those who want and worship power and wealth. They trample underfoot spiritual and ethical values and principles that are more important in the long run. They want influence over others and it becomes like a golden calve.
Paul talks about what happens in the lives of men who worship false man-made doctrines and love the creature more than the Creator.
Romans 1: 28-30
28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents.
The same evil conditions that existed among many of the people in Rome at Paul’s time are abundantly with us today.
Satan has been allowed to have power over all men who worship false gods and over all who will not hear and follow the voice of God.
Talking about Satan and what happened to Satan in the War in Heaven, who at that time was named Lucifer, the Lord said:
Moses 4: 4
4 And he became Satan, yea, even the devil, the father of all lies, to deceive and to blind men, and to lead them captive at his will, even as many as would not hearken unto my voice.
There is divine safety and growth for us by listening to the Words of God and not following any other.

Satan has been allowed to have power over all men who worship false gods and over all who will not hear and follow the voice of God.
Talking about Satan and what happened to Satan in the War in Heaven, who at that time was named Lucifer, the Lord said:
Moses 4: 4
4 And he became Satan, yea, even the devil, the father of all lies, to deceive and to blind men, and to lead them captive at his will, even as many as would not hearken unto my voice.
There is divine safety and growth for us by listening to the Words of God and not following any other.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS TODAY - PART 1
One: Thou shalt have no other Gods before me.
The Ten Commandments were given for man, given for those who are in made the image and likeness of God, but many pay very little attention to them and some ignore them completely.
Those people are a law unto themselves.
Unfortunately many do not know where to find God and so they push the thought out of their life.
If something spiritual comes up, they look to someone around them but this does not fill the void in their lives.
Their immortal spirit craves and is hungry for something missing deep inside. The hollow ache tells them that they cannot find satisfaction in earthly affluence.
Something from another source is needed.
Our Heavenly Father has warned and commanded us who are His children not to worship false gods. We are not to put the activities and pleasures of the world ahead of Him.
If we show greater love and interest for the things of the world and the fun and pleasures than we do for God our Heavenly Father, God said He would visit the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of those that hate him.
This disrespect for Heavenly Father will be passed on to our posterity. In other words, what they see is what they do or as the old saying goes, Monkey See, Monkey Do.
If a father loves our Heavenly Father, this also will pass on to their children.
He made this earth for us to gain a physical body for our spirit.
He gave us Free Agency to choose between right and wrong and to experience Joy and pain and to learn from the experience.
He gave us prophets who, by inspiration, gave us scriptures to guide us in this life. He gave the Ten Commandments to the world to help us all live together peacefully.
God’s commandments serve as a standard against which priorities can be measured. Our respect for the first commandment fashions our feelings for all the others.
If we break God’s first commandment, we cannot escape the consequences of our actions. If we allow any other person or cause to come before allegiance to Him, we will regret it.
Since we are all children of God and are created in His image, we have natural appetites to control which come from our thoughts. Wise mothers and fathers will teach members of their family how to make personal decisions based upon divine law.
Listen to what Amulek said about all of us in this life test:
ALMA 34: 32-34
32 For behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors.
33 And now, as I said unto you before, as ye have had so many witnesses, therefore, I beseech of you that ye do not procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end; for after this day of life, which is given us to prepare for eternity, behold, if we do not improve our time while in this life, then cometh the night of darkness wherein there can be no labor performed.
34 Ye cannot say when ye are brought to that awful crisis that I will repent, that I will return to my God. Nay, ye cannot say this; for that same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world.
Before coming here to gain an earthly body, we knew our Heavenly Father very well. He loved us and we loved Him there. We are here to learn about Him and to learn to love Him again.
Make Him first in your life.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS TODAY - INTRODUCTION - Ten Part Series
Importance of the Ten Commandments Today.
Without God’s Laws, a man or even a nation can fall.
If man will not allow himself to be ruled by God’s laws, he will be ruled by tyrants controlled by the influences of Satan.
These are the only two influences in the world, good and evil.
No tyranny is more devastating than man’s own selfishness without God’s Law. The Ten Commandments cannot be broken, only man or a nation can break themselves against them.
God our Heavenly Father wants us to be free and that is why we have Free Agency, and the Ten Commandments are very important for each of us.
We are being tested here. That is why we have our Free Agency to see which way we will choose.
Where are the Commandments found in Scripture?
They are found in three places. Two times in the Old Testament and one time in the Book of Mormon.
See Mosiah 13: 12-24
It was delivered by the Prophet Abinadi to the wicked King Noah.
Abinadi was protected by divine power so he could deliver his message, just before he was burned at the stake.
He also explained that Salvation did not come by the Law of Moses.
When the Lord emphasizes something with that much repetition, it must be important.
Exodus 20: 1-17 This is the first place in the Old testament where the Lord gave them to Moses.
1 And God spake all these words, saying,
2 I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
13 Thou shalt not kill. (How much of this is going on in the world right now.)
14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.
15 Thou shalt not steal.
16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.
The Prophet Moses repeated it again here and Moses tells of the covenant God made with Israel in Horeb.
See Deuteronomy 5: 6-21
These Commandments are fundamental to our relationships with God.
They are an important part of the restored gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
It is an important part of us in trying to become perfect like our Savior Jesus Christ and our Heavenly Father.
It is also the foundation for human conduct with our other brothers and sisters on the earth.
The Commandments are divided up into three priorities.
First: The first four commandments show us our proper relationship to God.
Second: The fifth commandment shows us the importance of family relationships and how we should treat each other.
Third: The last five commandments show us how to treat others that are not in our own family.
We must be committed to perfecting our attitudes and relationships in these three areas if we want to be perfected in all things.
